Hunter Stockton Thompson was an American journalist and author, most famous for his seminal works Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72. He is credited as the creator of Gonzo journalism, a style of reporting where reporters involve themselves in the action to such a degree that they become central figures of their stories. He was also known for his lifelong use of alcohol, LSD, mescaline and cocaine, his love of firearms, and his iconoclastic contempt for authoritarianism. After a long period of health problems, he committed suicide at age 67 in 2005.
