If I write that "Atonement" is a great novel, it probably wouldn't mean anything to you. A lot of novels are called great these days because a) the publishing house thinks it will boost the sales, and b) "great" is a word that is seriously at risk of having it's value deflated. Every novel that is able to entertain a reader and leave something of a mark in the reader's memory, is called great. Well, in my case the novel certainly claimed a part of my soul's territory (being pretentious every now and then has never hurt anybody seriously). The main character, Briony, is a girl who reminded me a lot of a younger version of myself: I don't know whether this is a compliment that I am paying to myself because Briony's actions are not very admirable. The way in which she explains certain events is very much over the top and dramtic; absolutely in the style of a girl who is standing with one foot in her teenage years and with the other in her childhood. I am not entirely sure if Briony is really to blame for the tragic events; her family is, according to me, a little bit to eager to believe her story. Anyhow, Ian McEwan definitly knows how to tell the story of the people where involved.
