 Dit boek zet je aan het denken

Als je dood gaat, wat wil je dan aan de volgende generatie meegeven? Randy Pausch moest deze vraag beantwoorden. Het resultaat is een enorm goed boek, waarin Randy je meeneemt in zijn leven. Vele vaak humoristische voorbeelden, uit zijn kindertijd, zijn studententijd en zijn tijd als vader komen voorbij. Bij elk kort hoofdstuk leer je weer een nieuwe gedachte over het leven. En als je het boek (sneller dan verwacht) uit hebt, besef je dat je niet over het leven van Randy Pausch hebt gelezen. Je hebt juist gelezen over hoe je je eigen leven moet leven. In het kort, dit boek is erg goed geschreven, staat vol met leuke situaties, maar raakt je toch en zet je aan het denken. Oftewel, ik raad hem zeker aan!

This is what happened: Randy Pausch, dying from pancreatic cancer gave a so-called Last Lecture at Carnegy Mellon University and it was taped. The quality of his lecture and the effect it had had on its audience made word travel fast. The lecture was put on YouTube and shortly after watched by millions. In the meantime, Mr. Pausch was blogging away about his experience as a husband and father of three very young kids knowing he had little time left. The fanclub grew and became international. Hyperion (Disney's publishing house) bought the rights, hired a top-class co-writer and published his thoughts which became a number one best seller in the US. So what was the lecture about? Well, watch YouTube and you'll understand. His enthusiam, his drive to share his wisdom and lessons about life is catchy indeed. You need to watch the lecture to be able to read the book properly. You need to read (parts of) his blog to weigh the words correctly. But even if you buy the book without knowing anything about Pausch- you'll understand why so many people cherish his words. Many one-liners latch on to you: "We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand," or "When you see yourself doing something badly and nobody’s bothering to tell you anymore, that’s a very bad place to be. Your critics are your ones telling you they still love you and care." The strength of this book lies in the fact that you would like you children to read it the moment you have finished it. Even if just a small percentage of its contents would stay with them, you'd be happy. The fact that it is a very American book - a bit over the top here and there - is not disturbing. You'll find that most of what is written, can be applied to anyone, no matter where they live and who they are. Don't think this is just one of those motivation books. It's different and far more personal. Mr. Pausch will certainly give you food for thought.

Heb de professor onlangs bij Oprah gezien, helaas is hij recent overleden. Zijn toespraak noemt al die zaken waarvan je wel weet dat dat de belangrijkste zaken in het leven zijn, maar die vaak naar de achtergrond worden geduwd door de snelle, materialistische maatschappij waar we helaas in leven. Werkelijk inspirerend, ontroerend en een ware 'eye-opener' waar je eigenlijk telkens naar terug zou moeten grijpen totdat het niet meer nodig is omdat je je prioriteiten bijgesteld hebt. een echte aanrader voor iedereen die weleens het gevoel heeft over de kop te gaan en meer duidelijkheid en eenvoud in zijn leven wil. Hij schreef het voor zijn 3 jonge kinderen, maar ik weet zeker dat hij veel meer mensen hier een grote dienst mee heeft bewezen.
