Deze publicatie bevat een keuze uit de eigen collectie van historische kleding en modeaccessoires van de achttiende tot de eenentwintigste eeuw van het Kyoto Costume Institute. Het KCI is opgericht in 1978 en verzamelt, bestudeert en exposeert systematisch westerse mode. In dit boek wordt per eeuw een inleiding gegeven, waarna per tijdvak in totaal 500 foto's (kleur en zwart-wit) worden gepresenteerd van historische kostuums op poppen, details en accessoires van toonaangevende damesmode. De tekst naast de foto's geeft relevante achtergrondinformatie. Het boek onderscheidt zich van andere kostuumgeschiedenisboeken doordat de collectie geplaatst wordt binnen sociale en culturele ontwikkelingen die weer geillustreerd worden door relevante afbeeldingen van schilderijen. Het werk wordt gecompleteerd door biografieen van ontwerpers, een verklarende woordenlijst, bibliografie en alfabetisch register. De eerste druk uit 2002* verscheen in een band, deze verder ongewijzigde druk is uitgevoerd in twee banden.
