Dit boek begint de laatste jaren een standaardwerk onder historici te worden.
Niet om even wat feitjes na te slaan.
Maar om de structurele factoren te begrijpen, die ten grondslag liggen aan de opkomst, bloei en ondergang van rijken in de geschiedenis. Cowen kijkt daarbij naar economische, politieke en ideologisch/religieuze factoren met veel aandacht voor het effect van technologische innovaties op de loop van de geschiedenis.
Kortom: leidt niet tot feitenkennis, maar tot begrip en inzicht!
