Dr. Harry M. Tiebout was one of the first psychiatrists to advance the theory that alcoholism is a disease rather than a problem of poor morals or a criminal activity He first set forth his views in 1946 while a member of the staff of Blythewood Sanitarium in Greenwich, Connecticut. Tiebout was also one of the first psychiatrists to endorse, without qualification, Alcoholics Anonymous as an agent in controlling compulsive drinking. Here, Bill Pittman and Damian McElrath have compiled many of his most important writings, including "The Act of Surrender in the Therapeutic Process, " "Conversion As a Psychological Phenomenon, " and "Alcoholics Anonymous -- An Experiment in Nature."
