Beschrijving

On a bitter November evening, young Mary Yellan journeys across the rainswept moors to Jamaica Inn in honour of her mother's dying request. When she arrives, the warning of the coachman begins to echo in her memory, for her aunt Patience cowers before hulking Uncle Joss Merlyn. Terrified of the inn's brooding power, Mary gradually finds herself ensnared in the dark schemes being enacted behind its crumbling walls -- and tempted to love a man she dares not trust.

A mystery, scary story about a girl in 1850 who moves to Cornwall, to live with her aunt and uncle at the Jamaica Inn. This Inn is well-known (and feared) in the surrounding area and the coach that drops her off does not stop for long! The book was fun to read, but to me, it was obviously a story, so I was always aware it was not real while I was reading it. Some things were just too obvious: like the innkeeper (uncle) had a brother who was many years younger, THUS an obvious love-candidate for the girl, Mary. Why would he be close to a generation younger? It could only be for that reason. So, in a way that was a pity, gave some of the story away for me. The vicar was a surprise though!
