Samenvatting

The best time-travel story since H.G. Wells’s The Time Machine, by the Grand Master of science fiction, the story of Andrew Harlan, Technician and Eternal.

'TO THE END OF TIME…'

His name is Andrew Harlan. He is an Eternal: a member of a highly exclusive organisation. He is a Technician, and his job is to range through past and future centuries, monitoring and even altering Time's myriad cause-and-effect relationships. The reality changes Harlan initiates may affect the lives of up to fifty billion people. Above all, therefore, a technician must be Dispassionate. An emotional make-up is a distinct handicap.

But whan he meets Noys, Harlan falls victim to a phenomenon older than Time itself – love. It is then that he realises that years of self-discipline must be cast aside. He must use the awesome technique of the Eternals to twist Time so that he and Noys might survive – together.

"We're talking serious legends, here. If superstars are those whose fame spills from the particular to the general, then the late Isaac Asimov was a superstar… In dealing with God, the Universe and the Whole Damned Thing, he had few equals" THE TIMES

"One of the most dynamic imaginations in science fiction" DAILY TELEGRAPH

"Asimov's stature in the field is richly deserved" LOCUS

  • A stand-alone novel or a prequel to the Galactic Empire saga

‘End of Eternity’ is a stand-alone novel by Isaac Asimov about time travel. Alternatively it may be considered as part of his Foundation canon where it describes how the possibility of a Galactic Empire came to pass. Initially the hard science-fiction lingo may be a bit off-putting, but whoever persists will be rewarded with a very inventive story. In ‘End of Eternity’ time is just another dimension in which one may travel back and forth. The Eternals do just that in order to administer small changes to reality for the betterment of humanity. Andrew Harlan is an experienced Eternal and has made countless of such adjustments to reality, but is now faced with the choice between his professional existence and that of the woman he loves. The book starts halfway through the story and then jumps back and forth between this point and a point approaching it from the start of the story until they meet and the tale proceeds in a more linear fashion. For people that are familiar with Asimov’s writing the ending will be a bit predictable, but throughout the rest of the book whenever one gets the impression of having it all figured out a twist will not be long in the waiting. Any tale about time travel will be subject to logical paradoxes and this novel is no exception. Most of these are circumvented relatively perfunctorily by introducing a new time variable called ‘physiotime’. Despite this enough paradoxes and technical ambiguities (e.g. how does a discontinuous change like the transition from existence into non-existence come about?) remain unaddressed. Still, ‘End of Eternity’ is a very imaginative novel demonstrating how the fate of humankind is determined by the choices of individuals. If you are interested in the themes addressed here (like the consequences of time travel for human evolution) this book is one that is guaranteed to stay on your mind long after having finished reading it. Certainly for people that liked Asimov’s Foundation novels this is a must-read.
