In his fifth book about ‘Lincoln Lawyer’ Mickey Haller, author Michael Connelly (MC) can barely hide his pride and joy that his character became the subject of a Hollywood movie. And that more LA lawyers now operate from digitalized Lincoln Town Cars with driver, saving on overheads by having no office. Mickey’s small staff operates and reports from home or from there they are sent. One will not live to see the end of the case. They conduct their rare staff meetings in a vacant building of which Mickey has a set of keys.
So everything goes crescendo. Or what? On p. 250 Mickey bumps into his LAPD detective half-brother Harry Bosch, and afterwards he muses, “We had daughters the same age. But his apparently still talked to him on a regular basis. After all, he put bad people in jail. I got them out”. He wants his daughter’s admiration, not her embarrassment about the scum he defends and the negative publicity she also suffers from.
This legal thriller has deep roots, featuring old and new murders, a vicious drug cartel, three prostitutes, a criminal serving a life sentence and members of at least one US federal law agency doing seriously unlawful things. There is little doubt that this case, in which he defends an internet pimp from a murder charge, will make or break Mickey’s career…
Perfectly-paced and deftly-plotted, it has just enough human interest and a dramatic courtroom battle and –finish, which lead to a satisfactory outcome in most respects. I’m just puzzled by Mickey’s new lady friend. Maybe, it works, maybe it is a depth charge waiting to explode in the next book. Finally, not all crime writers thank their editors, researchers or experts. MC does and gives some of them cameo parts under their own name in his thrillers. That I like too.

Ook dit boek van Michael Connelly is weer top. Hoofdpersoon is advocaat Mickey Haller, maar het boek bevat ook veel detective werk. Spannend, verrassend en het pakt je vanaf de 1e bladzijde. Ik kan geen enkel negatief punt bij dit boek bedenken. Lezen!
