Since much of this book is set in an alternative world, it constitutes a fantasy. However, it is called an alternative mythology because it takes as its starting point a real myth, and adds to that. The story of Oisin's journey to Tyr n'a n'Og, the land of Eternal Youth, in the company of Naomh is one of the great Irish myths. It personifies the quest for physical immortality in much the same way as do stories of the Fountain of Youth, and the Elixir of Life.

What I have done is to cut the story open in the middle, by sending Oisin on a quest to obtain the secret by which Tyr n'a n'Og can be saved, when the land itself is threatened by a personified form of Death. The tale rejoins the original myth with Oisin's return to Ireland, but a different interpretation is put on this part of the myth, and a different agenda proposed for his actions.
