Het is een briljant sociologische observatie dat technologisch denken in al zijn facetten ons leven meer en meer overneemt. Het beschrijft in de jaren 50 onze wereld van predictive policing tot kwantificeren van vriendschappen het komt voorbij. Een must read voor een ieder die gelooft in een technologisch gedreven utopie. Ellul heeft zijn stokpaardjes als Marixisme en het vroege protestantisme. Als je daar doorheen kunt kijken zie dat hij de kern raakt en bloot legt dat er geen vrije keuze is als het gaat om technologie. Het boek lijkt een scan waardoor woorden en letters soms niet te lezen zijn. Het doet afbreuk aan de leeservaring, maar de inhoud is briljant dus je zult door de slechte druk heen moeten lezen.
