Samenvatting

Opening volume of a day-by-day history of World War II, tied to the 75th anniversary of humanity's greatest conflict. This volume covers the years before, causes of, and lives that fought the war. It is based on ''World War II Plus 55,'' the author's award-winning website on World War II, which was on the web from 1995 to 2013.

Further volumes of this series will cover the war on a day-by-day basis, from 1939 to 1945, following around the ''big picture'' of major war leaders, nations, and participants, and the ''small picture'' of various warriors or civilians who were caught up in the struggle, and made history through their actions, ranging across a broad spectrum: from Winston Churchill to New Zealand Army Captains. We will see a variety of people: SS General Jurgen Stroop, American submarine ace Dick O'Kane, British tanker Andrew Wilson, Canadian generals Harry Foster and Bert Hoffmeister, Japanese destroyer captain Tameichi Hara, US Army Captain Dick Winters, RAF fighter ace Al Deere, Polish paratrooper Stanislaw Sosabowski, German Army Captain Siegfried Knappe, and many more.

Here is what historians are saying about the project:

The history of a war is among the most challenging of narratives about the past. It reveals "how the past is never dead, it's not even past," as William Faulkner famously wrote many years ago. David H. Lippman, an astute and diligent student of World War II, tells the stories of how that War was made and remade, how it was fought, and why it mattered to the endangered lives of its combatants. Lippman's book also sheds a brilliant light on why the War's horrific and poignant grandeur matter still in lives of twenty-first century global citizens.

Board of Governors Distinguished Service Professor of History

Well-researched, comprehensive, and readable--a must for any WWII aficionado.
--Marcus Brotherton,
author of Shifty's War and A Company of Heroes

David Lippman's World War II Plus 75 -- The Road to War is a thoroughly researched and well written detailed chronicle of World War II that encompasses all theatres and the experiences of a great many nations.
-- Mark Zuehlke
award-winning author of 11 books on Canada in World War II

David Lippman has undertaken a hugely ambitious project: to tell the story of the Second World War as it happened, day-by-day. The reader will find a wealth of information here, covering an amazing range of topics from strategy to sports, from domestic politics to genocide, battles, logistics, technology and economics, for every corner of the world. There is nothing else quite like it.
-- Geoff Megargee
author of ''Inside Hitler's High Command''

David Lippman possesses that rare ability of a wide yet focused knowledge of history with a flair for creative writing that makes it so much more interesting. I've referred to his work many times in my own research and found his writing fascinating and useful. I think any lover of war history will really enjoy David's book.
--T Martin Bennett
Author of the nonfiction novel Wounded Tiger
The story of the pilot who led the attack on Pearl Harbor
