There is also an occasional flash of wit - usually missing from French accounts, substituted instead with accusation and counter accusation - which makes the book a real joy to read. Henry Houssaye, an esteemed member of the French Institute, wrote a number of works on the Napoleonic period (mainly of the later years of Napoleon), amongst them plays and ancient history.
