Résumé

Thomas Alva Edison (1847–1931) was an American inventor and businessman who is often regarded as one of the most prolific inventors in history. Born in Milan, Ohio, Edison displayed an early interest in mechanics and chemistry. He began his career as a telegraph operator, which led him to experiment with electrical devices.

Edison is best known for his inventions that had a profound impact on modern life, including the phonograph, the incandescent light bulb, and the motion picture camera. He held over 1,000 patents in his name and was a key figure in the development of electric power generation and distribution.

In 1876, Edison established his famous research lab in Menlo Park, New Jersey, where he developed many of his groundbreaking inventions. He was a pioneer of the industrial research laboratory, where teams of workers would systematically test and refine his ideas. Edison's work on the light bulb, in particular, revolutionized how people lived and worked, making electric lighting accessible to the masses.

Despite his many successes, Edison also faced numerous challenges, including fierce competition with contemporaries like Nikola Tesla and George Westinghouse. His advocacy for direct current (DC) in the "War of Currents" was eventually overshadowed by the adoption of alternating current (AC).

Edison's legacy extends beyond his inventions; he was a shrewd businessman who founded several companies, including General Electric, which remains one of the largest corporations in the world today. His relentless work ethic, innovative spirit, and contributions to technology have made him a symbol of American ingenuity and perseverance.
