Phillips' dissertation locates the Neolithic cairns and chambers of the three most northern counties of mainland Scotland (Ross, Sutherland and Caithness) in order to investigate the place and role of these monuments within such a forbidding landscape and to examine what they reveal about the Neolithic view of the world. An extensive gazetteer of sites, supported throughout by plans and maps, follows a discussion of the type, chronology, location and grouping of monuments.
