werkstukken vast, die alles bezitten wat de blues kan bieden en die nochtans, volgens de
overlevering, geen totaalbeeld vormen van zijn kunnen. De sublieme teksten over vrouwen,
duivels, 'hellhounds' en de dood, het gepassioneerde gitaarspel en de tot het uiterste betrokken
zang roepen een haast mythologisch beeld op van een zeer getalenteerd bluesartiest. Dit wordt
versterkt door het ontbreken van concrete gegevens over zijn leven en de manier waarop hij in
'38 overlijdt, plus het feit dat er lange tijd slechts één foto van de man bekend is. Toch hangt
Johnson met zijn muziek niet in het luchtledige. Hij is een leerling van het duo Son House/Willie
Brown en de invloed van artiesten als Lonnie Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy, Blind Lemon Jefferson en
Kokomo Arnold is onmiskenbaar. Op zijn beurt speelt Johnson een enorme rol in de ontwikkeling
van de latere Chicago-blues. Artiesten die direct onder zijn invloed staan zijn Muddy Waters,
Robert Lockwood, Johnny Shines en Elmore James. Met het verschijnen van de fraai verzorgde
dubbel-CD The Complete Recordings, die alle 41 opnamen (inclusief 'outtakes') bevat die hij heeft
nagelaten, laait de belangstelling voor Robert Johnson plotseling weer op. Kort daarvoor is er
zowaar een tweede foto van hem ontdekt. Ook worden er over zijn leven weer enige nieuwe
feiten bekend, die allemaal terug te vinden zijn in het uitstekende boek Searching For Robert
Johnson. Naast de twee bestaande grafstenen wordt in '01 een derde voor hem opgericht, nu op
de plek waar hij 'echt' begraven ligt.
