Forced to accept the unbelievable, Elara finds a cautious ally in Captain Kael of the City Guard and a conflicted confidant in the king's younger son, Prince Rhys. Together, they uncover a hidden Scriptorium and a chronicler’s diary that reveals the full horror of the pact: in exchange for centuries of rule, the royal family feeds the kingdom's life force to an ancient, parasitic entity. After retrieving the Obsidian Locket, an artifact designed as a failsafe, they are betrayed by Elara’s mentor. In the ensuing chaos, Rhys is captured, and Elara becomes a fugitive, escaping the city with the locket as her only hope.

Her journey through the blighted lands reveals the human cost of the curse. She witnesses entire villages petrified into stone and communities torn apart by a madness-inducing "Whispering Plague." The experience strips away her scholarly detachment, replacing it with guilt and a hardening resolve. She is eventually reunited with Kael, who also escaped, but their respite is short-lived. They are ambushed by cursed knights, and Kael is mortally wounded, his death cementing Elara’s grief into a burning need for vengeance.

Following ancient maps, Elara reaches a ruined observatory in the Frostfang Mountains. There, the locket reveals the full, terrible prophecy: to break the curse, a new sovereign must claim the Onyx Throne, but only after performing a blood sacrifice, offering the life of a soul willingly given in love or loyalty. Horrified by the monstrous price of salvation but now wholly committed, Elara swears an oath to see the pact broken, no matter the cost.
