Conn Iggulden vous fait voyager dans la Grèce antique, ou plutôt Athènes, Corinthe, Sparta et les différentes autres cités-états. Le sens grec de l'unité n'existait pas encore et Conn sait bien le décrire. Des deux superpuissances Sparta et Athènes, l'image d'une Athènes « libre » est bien esquissée avec ses kanten positifs et ses défauts. Et non seulement le système juridique, mais aussi le protagoniste a ses lacunes. Un aspect qui vient au premier plan est sa réflexion sur le mariage : une femme doit obéir, engendrer des descendants et s'occuper des enfants. Un courant de pensée normal à l'époque, aujourd'hui ce courant de pensée est considéré comme misogyne. Conn sait comment en faire bon usage, mais comment je laisse au lecteur le soin de le découvrir. La raison pour laquelle je n'ai pas abordé l'invasion de la Perse tout de suite, c'est parce que le livre est plus qu'une histoire sur la victoire militaire et les pertes des cités-états grecques, c'est une histoire sur la vie d'un homme à Athènes pendant cette période .
