The Eagle series richt zich op twee hoofdpersonen, Quintus Licinius Cato en Lucius Cornelius Macro. Beide karakters zijn Romeinse soldaten. Macro, een veteraan die al meer dan 15 jaar in dienst is van het Romeinse Leger, is onlangs benoemd tot Centurionaat aan het begin van de serie. Cato is dan nog een tiener die opgroeide als slaaf in het keizerlijk paleis en wordt de Optio van Marco. Simon Scarrow haalde zijn master aan de University of East Angelia. Daarna ging hij werken aan de Inland Renvenue en werd later leraar aan de City College Norwich. De broer van Simon, Alex Scarrow, is ook een schrijver van verschillende titels maar richt zich op het young adult sciencefiction genre. Zijn andere broer Scott is een compliance officer in Londen.
