Dear sir, - We desire to congratulate you on the accomplishment of your great work, the Life of Charles Sumner. It will always be among the highest and most trustworthy authorities in regard to the history of the great transactions in which Mr. Sumner took part, es pecially the overthrow of slavery and the foundation of the Republican party. Three things were essential to the successful performance of this task, - loving sympathy with the great character it was your duty to portray, abso lute fidelity to truth, and literary capacity of a high order. All these you have possessed and manifested in amplest measure. Your name will always be inseparably asso ciated with the great events you have narrated, and with the character you have portrayed.
