De Joods-Griekse Albert Cohen (1895-1981) emigreerde op vijfjarige leeftijd met zijn ouders naar Frankrijk. Hij vestigde zich uiteindelijk in Genève, waar hij als diplomaat werkzaam was bij de Volkerenbond. In de jaren dertig publiceerde hij de eerste twee delen van zijn romancyclus: ‘Solal’ (1930) en ‘Mangeclous’ (1938). Cohen vluchtte in 1940 naar Londen, waar hem in 1943 het bericht bereikte dat zijn moeder in Marseille was overleden. Zijn eerbetoon aan haar, ‘Het boek van mijn moeder’, verscheen in 1954; de Nederlandse vertaling verscheen voor het eerst in 1987. Het succesvolle derde deel van zijn romancyclus, ‘De uitverkorene van de heer’, verscheen in 1968, en werd onderscheiden met de Grand Prix du Roman van de Académie Française. Onlangs verscheen het bij Van Gennep opnieuw in Nederlandse vertaling. Zijn werk is in meer dan twintig talen vertaald.
