Ragnar's book Andlit Norðursins (2004; English edition Faces of the North 2005) is a collection of his black-and-white photographs of vanishing ways of life in Iceland, the Faroes and Greenland taken over a period of fifteen years. His most recent book, Last Days of the Arctic (2010), has won critical acclaim, with multiple photo features in the New York Times and exhibitions most recently in Iceland and Ireland. As a photography ""Book of the Year"", the (London) Times described his work as 'remarkable', 'beautiful', and 'a gift for the eyes, mind and heart'.

Samenvatting

This book, published on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition, offers a first personal look at Ragnar Axelsson’s life’s work. For over 40 years, Ragnar Axelsson (b. 1958) has photographed people, animals, and landscapes in the most remote regions of Greenland, Iceland, and Siberia. In simple black and white photos, he captures the elementary human experience in nature on the edge of the habitable world. Axelsson highlights the extraordinary relationships between people, animals, and places in the Arctic and their extreme environment – relationships that change in profound and complex ways due to unprecedented climate change. Following Arctic Heroes (2020), Where the World is Melting is Ragnar Axelsson’s second publication with Kehrer Verlag and includes, among others, the well-known series Faces of the North, Glacier, and Last Days of the Arctic as well as a previously unpublished series.
