Francine Rivers begon haar carrière als schrijfster aan de Universiteit van Nevada, waar ze Engels en Journalistiek studeerde. Van 1976 tot 1985 was ze een succesvol auteur op de algemene markt en won ze diverse prijzen voor haar boeken. Hoewel ze christelijk werd opgevoed, kwam Francine pas later in haar leven echt tot geloof. Als getuigenis van haar geloof schreef ze vervolgens 'Bevrijdende liefde'. Deze hervertelling van het Bijbelverhaal van Hosea en Gomer die zich afspeelt in de tijd van de goudkoorts in Californië, wordt nu beschouwd als een van de klassiekers binnen de christelijke fictie. Sindsdien verschenen er diverse christelijke romans van haar hand die over de hele wereld worden gelezen, zoals 'Verdwaalde ster', 'De roep van de sjofar' en haar nieuwste roman 'Het meesterwerk'. Francine woont met haar man Rick in het noorden van Californië.
