‘Foundation’s Edge’ is the first of two sequels to Asimov’s acclaimed Foundation trilogy. The sequels were written over three decades after the original trilogy and are noticeably different in setup. For instance the original books of the Foundation series were in essence short story collections about the evolution of the Foundation rather than about the story of any specific characters(s). Both sequels on the other hand contain one continuous plot line about the exploits of a single cast list. The upshot of this is that the characters get more fleshed out and correspondingly one has more opportunity to grow genuinely sympathetic to them and their causes. The story starts over a century after the Foundation had purportedly destroyed the Second Foundation when Golan Trevize, a Councilman of the Foundation, starts to doubt the truth of this assertion. The search for the illicit Second Foundation resumes. The point of view is distributed evenly over the two Foundations and the motivations of both parties are detailed with equal sincerity. The answer to the question what the preferred fate is for the Seldon Plan and for the Foundations is left to the reader. Soon things become more complicated when signs appear of a third and even more furtive third party with even more subtle influence on the history of the Foundations. The mystery of the identity and motive of this hidden player is a driving force behind the tension of the story and will have one racing through those pages while continuously having the feeling of being at the brink of crucial revelation. Slowly the plot builds to an unavoidable and undeniably grand climax that takes Asimov’s ideas about the evolution of ‘mentalics’ to new epic heights. ‘Foundation’s Edge’ is unquestionably a worthy follow-up to the original Foundation trilogy. However, for a full understanding of the sequels one will have to have read the original Foundation Trilogy as well as Asimov’s The Robot series beforehand. Highly recommended!

Een van de meest veelbelovende leden van de Second Foundation ontdekt tijdens zijn onderzoek dat het plan van Hari Seldon te nauwgezet wordt uitgevoerd. Hij toont aan dat het onwaarschijnlijk is dat de voorspellingen van de grote wetenschapper zo precies uitkomen: er moet een sturende kracht aan het werk zijn. Dit vormt het uitgangspunt van het vierde deel van de Foundation serie. De vraag is natuurlijk welke partij deze kracht uitoefent en wat de bedoelingen van deze partij zijn met de bouw van het Tweede Galactische Imperium.

Er spelen opvallend veel vrouwen een belangrijke rol in dit vierde deel van de serie. Het lijkt erop dat Asimov met zijn tijd meeging en meer plaats maakte voor vrouwelijke hoofdrolspelers. Voor wat betreft dit meegaan met de tijd: computers, ruimteschepen die gebruik maken van vacuumenergie, quantummechanica, vele-werelden interpretaties en parallelle universa komen allemaal ter sprake. Typerend voor de schrijver is dat alle gebeurtenissen vanuit meerdere perspectieven worden bekeken. Alles is op vele manieren te interpreteren en de personages hebben hier amusante gesprekken over. Overtuigend is het natuurlijk niet, maar het leest wel lekker weg.

Dit deel is aanmerkelijk dikker dan de oorspronkelijke drie. Asimov verweeft er verwijzingen naar zijn andere boeken in. Dit geldt met name voor de robots die erin voorkomen, gekoppeld aan zijn robotverhalen en de drie beroemde hoofdwetten van de Robotica. De plot van het verhaal, dat onafhankelijk van zijn andere Foudation boeken is te lezen, steunt zelfs op een van de drie wetten. In de laatste conversatie constateert de hoofdrolspeler dat alle informatie met betrekking tot de Aarde – de mysterieuze planeet waar al het leven oorspronkelijk zou zijn begonnen – is verwijderd. Dit is uiteraard de opmaat voor het volgende deel: ‘Foundation and Earth’.
