Samenvatting

A tiny number of Jews had the chance to flee the Netherlands during Nazi occupation. A unique unpublished family memoir of an extraordinary journey to freedom.

Lisbon, May 15, 1941. At the end of a tense 1,400-mile journey across Europe, Jewish husband and wife Albert and Ella Andriesse-van den Bergh embark on a ship to New York. They have just fled the Netherlands with their children. During the Atlantic crossing they record their stories.

In Family On The Run the couple's memoirs are shared for the first time with a wider audience. Their accounts provide an authentic glimpse into the life of a few very fortunate Jews who succeeded in escaping from the Netherlands in the first years of the Second World War.

In annotating these memoirs, historian Bart Wallet (University of Amsterdam/Free University) has focused on the extraordinary, almost unknown story of how a small number of Dutch Jews was granted permission by the Nazi authorities to emigrate from occupied territory.

Illustrated with original and previously unpublished photographs and documents from the family archive.

Originally published in Dutch titled 'Ontkomen. Het vluchtverhaal van Albert en Ella Andriesse-van den Bergh, 1940-1941'.
