Hendrik van Winkoop, born on February 3, 1862, in Nijkerk, owned the clothing warehouse Van Winkoop & Schlüter in Utrecht and, from 1903 onward, was a very active and enterprising photographer. His photographic work garnered much admiration over the years and was widely published. In stereo photography, Van Winkoop, along with the renowned Major General Lieuwe Evert Willem van Albada (1868-1955) and ophthalmologist Gilles Pieter Duuring (1875-1945), pursued wide-angle and orthostereoscopy. Two new books about the photographer from Utrecht (one with the story and a hardcover photo book with stereo photographs and a 3D viewer) transport the reader back to his beloved mountain world of over 100 years ago.
The trio of stereoscopists (Van Albada, Van Winkoop, and Duuring) collaborated for many years in the field of stereo photography. Van Albada as a technician, inventor, and developer of the best photographic system for making and viewing stereo photos. Duuring and Van Winkoop primarily served as advisors and photographers. Van Winkoop used, among other things, Van Albada's cameras and lenses to create the most beautiful stereo photos of the time. And Van Albada demonstrated his new equipment using Van Winkoop's stereo photographs.
Family of Rutger Hauer
Van Winkoop began taking photographs as early as 1903. He used the stereo camera designed by Van Albada and marketed by Schaap & Co. With this camera, he also photographed the Van Winkoop and Hauer families (known for their furniture making business in Utrecht), who were closely related. Hendrik van Winkoop was the brother of the great-grandfather of the famous Dutch actor Rutger Hauer. Stereo photographs of the Hauer family, held in the Utrecht Archives, could previously not be attributed to a single photographer, but in one of them, Van Winkoop can be clearly seen holding the camera's self-timer; as writer Ronald Schalekamp discovered.
Borculo Storm Disaster in 3D
Van Winkoop made his finest orthostereoscopic images in the mountains, including Switzerland, France, and Italy, using the 9x13 or 9x14 cm glass format. Viewed through a good stereoscope, they provide a lifelike image of, among other things, the mountain landscapes that Van Winkoop so cherished over a hundred years ago. The 3D images taken shortly after the 1925 Borculo storm disaster are also exceptional. The Utrecht-based stereo photographer also achieved exceptional results in macro photography.
Books, stereo viewer, and original image
Ronald Schalekamp of specialty publisher Persbureau Zwolle captured Van Winkoop's story and stereo photographs in two books. The books are offered as a set—one textbook and the hardcover photo book—along with a stereo viewer and an original stereo glass slide by Van Winkoop. In the photo book, Van Winkoop's photographs can be viewed in 3D; as if you were there, just as the photographer intended over 100 years ago.
Exceptional photographer
With this set, the Zwolle-based publisher aims to save Hendrik van Winkoop from oblivion. Hendrik van Winkoop occupied a special place in Dutch stereo photography, which, from the early 1900s onward—under the leadership of Van Albada, Van Winkoop, and Duuring—aimed at presenting the most realistic and truthful image of reality possible. Van Winkoop was the absolute master at making and developing/printing orthostereoscopic photographs on glass.
