Deze klassieker is nog altijd een mooi cadeau voor jonge mannen. Er is nu best veel anders, maar het man worden is nog steeds onderbelicht en ondergewaardeerd. Door onbegrip en vooroordelen. Dit boek heb ik aan mijn zonen en die van mijn vriendinnen gegeven op hun 18e verjaardag. Inmiddels allemaal fantastische mannen.

Iron John is one of the Grimm Brothers stories, it was originally called Der Eisenhans. This story is added to the book, it is the last chapter. Every chapter the author takes a segment from the story and explains what he thinks is communicated by it. Symbolism is an important part of how he deciphers the fairy tale. Robert Bly is a poet so you shouldn't be surprised to encounter a poem here and there. The book is more philosophical than practical so don't expect guidelines "on being a man". Bly argues our society has a problem: we no longer have initiations from boyhood into manhood performed by elders (i.e. older men). The story of Iron John is a path of initiation. Iron John (The Wild Man) can be seen as a mentor of this younger boy (the son of the King). The boy travels from one initiatory stage to the other, meeting new challenges in each phase with the author explaining to you what the symbols mean, what the colors may suggest. You should be critical though, we can't ask the Grimm brothers what they meant, for all we know they just wanted to write a nice story, interpretations may differ so don't forget to think for yourself.

Mijnheer Bly gebruikt veel aparte bewoordingen waardoor je de helft van de tijd maar moet gokken wat hij nou eigenlijk bedoeld. Ook is hij behoorlijk negatief. Jammer. Al met al taaie kost.
