Just Kids The National Book Award-winning memoir

A beautiful book, a must read, that is if you feel for young artists or for young people with a fire within. Patti Smith narrates her early youth as if it has just happened; so many details can only come from notebooks daily updated with devoted precision. The narration creates a picture where the trivial is evened with the mythical; that, due to the names that pass by their lives and through the pages of the book. P.Smith "wears" them in their life in Chelsey hotel just like the garments that they wore, she and Robert Mapplethorpe, in every occasion, described in provocative detail. Nevertheless this is more the "trivial" and the "provocative" of some people, young (or) artists; their youth does not differ so much from generation to generation: the fiery passion in deprivation from the basics, where basics are a safe place to live, food, warmth; the standard for average people from normal families in the west. Some of you will recognise the one sandwich and one drink shared at the diner, the one ticket to the museum where one sees the other one stays outside and waits for the description, the lack of sanitary commodities, the cold, etc. P.Smith adds lice, peeing cups etc. to an extreme life that inevitably has a limited span...

Mooie fabel over hoe deze getalenteerde mensen elkaar ontmoetten in het New York van eind jaren 60 70 en na vele armoede, langzaam tot stardom komen.. Hun verblijf in het illustere Chelsea hotel en alles komt aan bod en ook nog eens poetisch.. ik heb ervan genoten en hield nog meer van Patti en Robert dan ik al deed.. prachtig, jammer dat ik er niet bij was

Patti Smith wilde als klein meisje al kunstenaar worden. de manier waarop ze eruit zien, waarop ze leven. hun manier van expressie. door 'toevalligheden' komt ze Robert Mapplethorpe tegen na het ouderlijk huis te hebben verlaten. en vanaf het moment dat hij Patti 'het leven redt' zijn ze beste vrienden. of, zielsmaatjes. dat is tenminste de indruk die ik krijg. Patti Smith heeft een eerlijke manier van schrijven. ze draait nergens omheen, weet alles het goede woord te geven en is zelf ook nog eens erg interessant: dit is niet het verhaal over Robert Mapplethorpe of over Patti Smith, dit is eerder het verhaal over de vriendschap/relatie van Robert en Patti.

Mooie tijdsgeest, sterke vrouw, fijne pen

Heb dit boek al eens gelezen nadat ik het kocht in Glastonbury. Vond het destijds zo mooi, dat ik het opnieuw gekocht heb om mijn vriend voor te lezen. Dat zegt wel wat, niet? Het boek werd snel geleverd, dus we hebben al weken voorleesplezier.
