7 stories that all connect with each other.
2073: Eric, a freelance journalist, travels to the Island of the Blessed to find out whether the rumours of immortality are true. There, he meets Merle, who he instantly feels attracted to, but can he discover why before it's too late?
We go further and further back in time with each new story.
This was one of those books that I wanted to love but just couldn't, and I'm going to break down exactly what I liked and disliked.
+The Leitmotiven in this novel were pretty cool and did a good job of connecting the stories.
+The story set in 1848 was pretty spooky and had a really nice twist.
+I appreciate that the author gave us different types of love, not just man-woman but e.g. also siblings.
-I didn't like the language. I know many people disagree with me here, but it just didn't work for me. This is one of those novels in which atmosphere can make or break a book, and for me it didn't deliver. This has to do with the pacing, which is very fast. You can sit down and finish this book in an evening. I had hoped for lyrical sentences and a bit more description to actually get the atmosphere going. This might also have to do with the fact that I felt that the language didn't always reflect the time period we were in (which is something that, for example, 'Cloud Atlas' does wonderfully well and which instantly connects us to the story).
-This ties in with another problem I had: I couldn't connect to the characters. Because each story is so short, we spend too little time with the characters to actually get to know them.
-Which leads to another problem: I didn't feel that Merle's and Eric's love was that strong. Sometimes, they hardly seem to notice each other or they don't even meet. In a story that is all about the epicness of love, you can't get away with that.
All in all, I liked the plot but I'm a little dissapointed in the way it was presented to us.Vond je dit een nuttige review?00
