‘Second Foundation’, the third part of the original Foundation trilogy is like its predecessor a book in two episodes. The first continues the story of the Mule and his search for the location of the second Foundation five years after his first attempt was foiled by Bayta. The ingenious twist here is that by now the reader will be well acquainted with the Mule whereas it is the illicit second Foundation that constitutes the big enigma. As a result it becomes unclear which of the two parties actually embodies the benefactor and which one the menace to civilization. Asimov provides no definite answer and the reader is given the freedom to make his or her own judgments.

The second part of the story takes place 70 years after the Mule’s reign and describes the efforts of a small group of conspirators that are out to stop the ominously pervasive but still concealed second Foundation. This part reads like a thriller and will continuously leave one wondering who is double playing who in this multilayered game of duplicity. Once again it becomes obvious that the question of good or evil depends on the perspective. This storyline contains the most engaging set of characters of the original Foundation novels, making ‘Second Foundation’ the most enjoyable book of the trilogy. For the interested reader there fortunately is enough opportunity to spend more time in the Foundation Universe as decades later Asimov extended the Foundation Trilogy with two sequels and two prequels. Those novels in addition make a connection to Asimov’s ‘The Robot’ series and for that reason anyone who plans to continue with the Foundation extensions is strongly advised to first read the Robot series, starting with ‘Caves of Steel’.

Een waardige opvolger in de Foundation-serie. Maar het is wel zo handig om de serie in de goede volgorde te lezen, dus eerst 'Foundation and Empire' lezen alvorens aan 'Second Foundation' te beginnen.

Het woord ‘computer’ komt in geen van de drie eerste delen van de Foundation serie voor. De planeet Trantor – het administratieve centrum van het eerste Galactische Imperium – herbergt ruim 40 miljard ambtenaren die nodig zijn voor het afhandelen van alle formulieren die – in drievoud – worden ingevuld door de 10 tot de macht 15 bewoners van het Rijk (een eenvoudige breuk die overigens aantoont dat dit toch echt tot de onmogelijkheden behoort, ook al vult iedere bewoner slechts een formulier per jaar in!). Alle gebouwen zijn van metaal. Aardappelen en groenten worden vanaf twintig omliggende agrarische planeten aangevoerd per ruimteschip. Klinkt allemaal niet erg vooruitstrevend.

In dit derde deel van de legendarische serie van Asimov gaat de Second Foundation een belangrijke rol spelen. In tegenstelling tot de First Foundation is het bestaan van deze groep, evenals haar lokatie, in nevelen gehuld. Er zijn slechts twee feiten bekend: 1) De Second Foundation bevindt zich aan het andere einde van het Rijk; 2) Zoals de First Foundation bestaat uit wetenschappers van de ‘hard science’, bestaat de Second Foundation uit wetenschappers uit de ‘soft science’, te weten de psychologie. De rol van de Second Foundation is duister en wordt als een regelrechte bedreiging gezien door de First Foundation. Actie is dus geboden!

Asimov grossiert in dubbele bodems. Dat maakt ook dit deel weer leuk om te lezen. Oorspronkelijk bestond de Foundation uit een paar losse verhalen in de science fiction tijdschriften uit de jaren veertig en vijftig. Asimov stelde er drie delen mee samen. ‘Second Foundation’ is het laatste van deze oorspronkelijke drie delen. Veel later – in de jaren tachtig – verschenen er nog drie delen. Dus op naar ‘Foundation’s Edge’!
