Samenvatting

You may have heard about the detox process before. You may have read one of the dozens of books on the market about the subject. You may have followed some sort of cleanse you found on the Internet. You may have fasted, or purged, or abstained for the sake of your health. You may be sick, you may be tired, you may be wracked with problems that result from being overweight, overworked, and overstressed. You may have tried everything - and still be seeking “the” answer.

I know that much of what is out there in terms of advice is questionable, if not outright quackery. A lot of it is a thinly disguised way to sell you pricey supplements, powders, and other such fairy dust. “Detox” has become the new Wild West, full of shoot-from-the-hip healers and modern snake-oil salesmen, looking to profit from the desperate and debilitated, who are willing to embrace magical thinking in their search for a real cure.

I have seen real results in literally hundreds of patients, and I can tell you with authority that the Detox

Prescription has nothing to do with abnegation and everything to do with embracing and eating food. Real food. Healing, healthful, detoxifying food.

Pharmaceuticals are still the favored recourse among the American medical elite.

God knows that drugs can work wonders, in so many cases greatly improving and even saving lives. But just as often (dare I say more often?), they are unnecessary!

He tells us that all disease and discomfort in the body can be traced to one of only five root causes:

Infectious agents

Inherited tendencies (that is to say, what’s bred into our DNA)

Psychological dysfunction

Nutritional deficiency

Toxicity

Modern medical practice is largely focused on the first three of these, all of which can sometimes respond marvelously to our pharmaceutical arsenal. Still, the psychological bases of disease (and many of our “functional” problems) are primarily practiced and reimbursed on the pharmaceutical model, rather than engaged on more fully realigning our minds with more productive thought processes.

The last two—nutritional deficiency and toxicity—are rarely addressed at all, and when they are, it is only in the most severe cases—anemia, say, or ingestion of rat poison.

That is a shame, since nutritional deficiency and toxicity, along with psychological dysfunction, offer our greatest opportunity to intervene in disease before it manifests in chronic symptoms and before our patients need to step on the treadmill of Western medical care. They are a kind of medical “sweet spot,” the areas in which I believe we doctors have our greatest opportunity to do good in the world.

We can help our patients make simple changes in their lives that can not only really, truly make them feel and operate better but actually circumvent the kinds of serious diseases—heart disease, diabetes, cancer—that are eating away at their bodies and bank accounts and even our social structure.

Today we’ve mapped the human genome and logged the potential to treat many inherited diseases right at the source.

This exciting new field of epigenetics—meaning literally “around” the gene—allows us to see how environmental factors alter our gene expression in a specific place within each cell. As a result, we now know that when we take active control of these factors, we can literally help control our health and genetic destiny—no doctors or drugs necessary!

In fact, because some people make their living based on their looks (actors and actresses, models) or physical performance (musicians, athletes, dancers, etc.), they take great care to take care of themselves. But across the board, most are not living up to what they feel is their true potential in terms of capability, resilience, and energy.

I love to help people with all of it: I teach people how to breathe deeply and reduce their stress with meditation. I educate them about the importance of rest and show them how to get a good night’s sleep. I help them devise exercise plans that are both efficient and effective. I tell them how to use the power of their thoughts to create more of what it is they want. And I help them understand the importance of making meaningful interpersonal connections. It’s all important.

But truthfully? It can be a struggle to eat in a way that is truly optimal; there are so many different diet plans, trendy superfoods, and strong opinions out there that people get confused, if not completely overwhelmed. It’s worth the effort to sort through the dross, because when you discover the way to eat right and eat well, results are profound.

In my opinion, the scariest thing happening today is the typical American diet, and its truly monumental environmental and health consequences. Our culture has become focused on quantity over quality and given birth to a food industry that cranks out ever more of what we most like to eat: meats and sweets. We do that by bullying nature into producing more, too—with chemical pesticides and herbicides and fertilizers that can be nearly as damaging as industrial waste. As a result, most of us are overfed but undernourished, toxic, chronically inflamed, and well on our way toward the whole range of symptoms that comprise metabolic syndrome, characterized by high blood pressure and serum cholesterol levels, obesity, and prediabetic insulin resistance—the chronic conditions that increasingly rule over our health care mess.

You can get off the crazy train. In fact, you have the chance to turn things around pretty quickly by combining the arts of detoxification and optimal nutrition.

We all know this, if only subconsciously. And yet we are surrounded by an onslaught of messages encouraging us to eat highly processed foods. They’re quick!

They’re easy! They’re cheap! Never mind that they’re also potentially harmful, or even deadly.

The situation sounds dire because it is dire, but don’t get too depressed. You can get off the crazy train. In fact, you have the chance to turn things around pretty quickly by combining the arts of detoxification and optimal nutrition. That’s what this book is about.

You can build a better new you every time you pick up a spoon, a fork, or a straw. You’ve heard it before, but I’ll say it again: Food is medicine. Every bite you eat (of unprocessed real food, that is) or sip you take (of juice or tea) is composed of hundreds of thousands of tiny molecules that make your cells what they are and tell them what to do. That’s right. Food components are literally genetic signaling molecules that tell those disease tendencies bred in our bones to stay dormant by providing the nutrition your body needs to keep on functioning optimally. When you eat well, you have a chance to create energy, forestall disease, remove toxins from your system, and improve every aspect of your health.

Because you replace every molecule of every cell in your body within the course of only 1 year, I am not being flip when I refer to the “new you.” It is quite literally possible, no matter how bad you’re feeling or eating today, to be utterly transformed in just 365 days. But it won’t take you that long. You can be feeling significantly better in just a couple of days and make lasting changes to your health within a month. It’s amazing, really, the potential you have for health and healing—if you only can recognize it and can learn to work with it, rather than against it.

You can, and I am here to tell you how to do it!

Consider The Detox Prescription a giant leap from where you are right now toward where you want to be. As the name suggests, this program is a cleanse plan, carefully designed to help you undo whatever damage has already been done, prevent further damage, and release toxins that have accumulated in the body’s tissues.

But beyond that, it’s also a crash course in optimal nutrition, teaching you how to nourish your own body with all the phytonutrients and antioxidants it needs to support the processes of detoxification and health. Eating a diet based on fruits and vegetables, preferably organic, you can become maximally healthy, cleaning out toxins, putting out free-radical fires, improving metabolism, and supporting your own disease-fighting capacity.
