Samenvatting

In a life driven by emotion, sexual addiction, and shame, Charlie Street, private investigator and recovering alcoholic, is finding it difficult to get anything done. Although he's a Christian, Charlie is oblivious of his flaws, and his behavior is much the same as when he was in active addiction. When he's almost killed by two men while conductiong an investigation, his life takes a drastic turn. Charlie realizes he's getting old, he's vulnerable, his health is on the downside and, reliving the horror of the incident, he's thinking about quitting his work. But Charlie doesn't have any money. He's five years from retirement age, and he also doesn't have much work. Unless he wants to work on the McIver case some more. He hadn't wanted the McIver case when he got it-it's a murder, and his experience in homicide is limited, but he'd been nearly bankrupted by his divorce, has never financially recovered, and the two-hundred-thousand-dollar reward that Mrs. McIver ofered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of her husbands' killer looked good to him at the time. Charlie now knows he needs the reward as a supplement to Social Security. He is encouraged by his friend, H L Rankin, who is also mayor of the town, to work a while longer and to hire someone like one of his police officers, part time, to go along with him at night. Charlie witnesses a violent fight between two men at the Wigwam Bar and is impressed with the victor. He tracks him down and learns that he is Junior McDonald, the son of Susan McDonald, a woman Charlie had known and had been secretly obsessed with as a teenager more than forty years ago. Charlies's addiction kicks in, and his obsession with Susan is renewed. He hires Junior in order to have access to Susan, and the two set out to work on the case. Ben Lowery, owner of the Wigwam Bar, and believed by Charlie to hold a key to the murder, refuses to co-operate, and when Junior answers violence with violence, they only succeed in stirring things up. Charlie's tensions are mounting. He now knows that Junior is a thug, and he's terrified that Junior's methods could get them into trouble with the authorities, or organizations like the ACLU. He's troubled when his efforts to seduce Susan wind up in impotence. Frances, his married mistress of more than a decade, is always available at his calling. There's too much happening at once, and he can't seem to concentrate on the investigation. Vivian Flack, his girlfriend of ten years, is his only source of refuge, but he's so obsessed with Susan that he finally breaks with Vivian. Junior seems to be leading now. They witness an altercation between Ben Lowery and a motorcyclist at the Wigwam Bar in which Ben ultimately kills the man in self defense. At wit's end, Charlie talks to his recovery sponsor, Walt, and seems to be renewed. He decides to abandon the case. He's both saddened and relieved when he learns that Mrs. McIver has died of complications resulting from diabetes. Then he dates Louise, a waitress at The Belmont Grill, and his mental condition takes a turn for the worse. He is so troubled now that he decides he's giving up. He goes to a supermarket to buy beer and wine and runs into an alcoholic friend who, in his own wet-brained way, is so effective in proclaiming his victory over alcohol that Charlie flees the store in shame. Charlie wants to get his life in order. When he learns that the police are going to indict Ben Lowery for murder, he calls Ben's attorney and tells him what he and Junior know. He talks to Walt again, acknowledges his selfish and dishonest use of the women, and is determined to make a change. Shaken by the killing of the cyclist, and having information that will put the McIver mystery to rest, Ben Lowery also wants to change.Charlie realizes he could never remember feeling melancholy when he was with Vivian. He feels now that he's gradually begun to heal, and he sets out to make things right.
