Samenvatting

Demand for petroleum products increases everywhere in the world. At the same time the reserves of petroleum are being depleted. These aspects force petroleum-importing countries to find alternative petroleum-substitutes in order to ensure their energy security. One of the possible alternatives to natural petroleum is shale oil obtained from the thermochemical destruction of oil shale. The goal of this work was to elucidate the possibilities for more effective thermochemical upgrading of Estonian kukersite oil shale in order to obtain oil with possibly high yield and high content hydrocarbons, which would be a synthetic analogue to natural petroleum. By implementing the innovative technology worked out in this work, the high yield of raffinate with high content of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons and low of heteroatomic compounds, qualifying as synthetic petroleum from Estonian kukersite oil shale, was proposed for the first time in the world.
