Adam Tooze is auteur en hoogleraar Moderne Geschiedenis aan Columbia University, waar hij tevens de voorzitter is van het European Institute. Hij is gespecialiseerd in de economische wereldgeschiedenis en schreef eerder onder andere het veelgeprezen Gecrasht, over de financiële crisis van 2008, dat bekroond werd met de Lionel Gelber Prize.
