There were some, however, who felt this coldness more than the lady felt it herself. These more especially were the ladies of the colonel and of Captain Belford?the two, by the way, of superior rank and family to all the others. They urged the more their courtesy to Mrs. Seyton, and she, however proud in her heart, shewed no airs; and though with distant unassumption she accepted their civilities and kindness, there was sufficient in her manner which bespoke how much in reality she pitied the restraint they had been put under on her account. This feeling of reserve and distance, however delicately shewn, towards his wife, cut her doting husband the more from the interesting situation she began to be in. And moreover, he felt there was some reasonableness in the conduct of his officers, who were the authors of the slander, and who sheweii no enjoyment inthe scandal; yet greater satisfaction he could not make them. If he left the regiment and betook him to another, rumour would be there before him; and the very act of his leaving might be deemed a tacit concedence to the truth of the suspicion. About a year after Mrs. Seyton had arrived at the barracks she bore a son, who will form the subject of this eventful history. With this commencement of his life we will close this chapt...
