J.K. (Joanne Kathleen) Rowling (1965) is de Britse schrijfster van de wereldberoemde Harry Potter boeken. Zij groeide op in Chepstow, Engeland. Na de middelbare school studeerde ze Frans en Klassieke Talen, werkte voor Amnesty International en gaf een aantal jaren les. Ze verhuisde naar Portugal om Engels te doceren, en ontmoette daar haar eerste echtgenoot. Het huwelijk hield echter geen stand en na de scheiding in 1993 verhuisde zij naar Edinburgh met haar pasgeboren dochter. Omdat ze in een kleine flat woonde, schreef ze in café Nicholson aan haar boek en wist Harry Potter en de Steen der Wijzen in zes maanden te voltooien. Zowel dit debuut als de drie volgende Potterdelen werden overstelpt met bekroningen en prijzen. In Nederland kregen de Harry Potter boeken onder andere de vermeldingen Beste Boek van het Jaar 2001, Prijs van de Jonge Jury, de Hotze de Roosprijs en de Prijs van de Kinderjury voor het beste kinderboek ooit. Rowlings favoriete auteurs zijn Jane Austen en Roddy Doyle, en voor kinderen Edith Nesbit. Zelf koos zij er niet bewust voor om kinderboeken te schrijven. Rowling schrijft over wat zij zelf spannend en interessant vindt en volgens haar verklaart dat ook de populariteit van haar boeken onder volwassenen.
