Joseph Conrad

Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) was born in Berdichev, in the Ukraine, in a region that had once been a part of Poland but was then under Russian rule. His father Apollo Korzeniowski was an aristocrat without lands, a poet and translator of English and French literature. The family estates had been sequestrated in 1839 following an anti-Russian rebellion. As a boy the young Joseph read Polish and French versions of English novels with his father. When Apollo Korzeniowski became embroiled in political activities, he was sent to exile with his family to Volgoda, northern Russia, in 1861.

By 1869 Conrad's both parents had died of tuberculosis, and he was sent to Switzerland to his maternal uncle Tadeusz Bobrowski, who was to be a continuing influence on his life. Conrad attended schools in Kraków and persuaded his uncle to let him go to the sea. In the mid-1870s he joined the French merchant marine as an apprentice, and made three voyages to the West Indies between 1875 and 1878. During his youth Conrad also was involved in arms smuggling for the Carlist cause in Spain.

After being wounded in a duel or of a self-inflicted gunshot in the chest, Conrad continued his career at the seas for 16 years in the British merchant navy. This was a turning point in his life. Conrad rose through the ranks from common seaman to first mate, and by 1886 he obtained his master mariner's certificate, commanding his own ship, Otago. In the same year he was given British citizenship and he changed officially his name to Joseph Conrad.

In 1890 he sailed in Africa up the Congo River. The journey provided much material for his novel Heart of Darkness. However, the fabled East Indies particularly attracted Conrad and it became the setting of many of his stories. By 1894 Conrad's sea life was over. During the long journeys he had started to write and Conrad decided to devote himself entirely to literature. At the age of 36 Conrad settled down in England.

Although Conrad is known as a novelist, he tried his hand also as a playwright. His first one-act play was not success - the audience rejected it. But after finishing the text he learned the existence of the Censor of the Plays, which inspired his satirical essay about the obscure civil servant. Conrad was an Anglophile who regarded Britain as a land which respected individual liberties. As a writer he accepted the verdict of a free and independent public, but associated this official figure of censorship to the atmosphere of the Far East and the 'mustiness of the Middle Ages', which shouldn't be part of the twentieth-century England.

Recensie(s)

Once experienced, it is hard to let Heart of Darkness go. A masterpiece of surprise, of expression and psychological nuance, of fury at colonial expansion and of how men make the least of life . . . endlessly readable and worthy of rereading * Telegraph * As powerful a condemnation of imperialism as has ever been written * Observer *

    Joseph Conrad Heart of Darkness

    An African dream

In Joseph Conrad's novel "Heart of Darkness" is the main character Kurtz is a man with a mission. He wants to elevate the Africans. It ends in a total failure, and his idealism turns into a ruthless hatred. Alto the effect on Kurtz's very radical, but how often do we change our initial good intentions into cynicism, without being prepared to question our own assumptions.
In her publication "Death Aid” the UN economist Dambisa Moyo uses her disappointment to reconsider the principles of development cooperation once more. Very bluntly put, Africa off the auxiliary drip and only provide money under the condition of revenue. In this way we may better assist Africa and we avoid the trap of Kurtz where idealism turns into hatred or at least indifference.
Marlow, the narrator, startled even the most when he discovers the relationship between himself, the Africans and Kurtz, the 'Heart of Darkness' inside us, actually.

Mama Africa a retired German doctor who lives near my guesthouse. In her house, she has taken in eight street children and five stray dogs. Sometimes she collects money and goods in Germany for one of her projects. Or she notifies the police in vain, to report mistreatment or abuse. Without bribe the police here do not seem to anything. With her good work she has unfortunately also fallen into the trap of many idealists. Her respect for the people of Ghana has not improved. I myself hide behind the thought that many residents of Ghana survive under circumstances difficult conceivable for us. But how long can I keep that up? Apparently not for fourteen years.

    an African dream

    the camouflaged Baobab
    disappears into the forest
    gold grins in mouths
    silver scuffles in nets

    the wriggling fish reaches
    to the light with a
    backbone of words
    he fights for his life

    vehicles as carcasses
    in advanced states of disintegration
    along the dusty red road
    the devil of the African
    heat is merciless as the
    dreamtime overwhelms me

    The horror! The Horror!

    The Horror! The Horror!
In beautiful prose and powerful wisdom Joseph Conrad still shows how vulnerable our civilization is. The constant battle between reason and emotion hits you like a hammer in lines as:
"I have wresteld with death. It is the most unexciting contest you can imagine. It takes place in an impalable greyness, without nothing underfoot, with nothing around, without spectators, without clamour, without glory, without the great desire of victory, without the great fear of defeat, in a sicklyatmosphere of tepid scepticism, without much belief in your own right, and still less in that of your adversary. If such is the form of ultimate wisdom, then life is a greater riddle than some of us think it to be.
Heart Of Darkness is a timeless and intense classic. A must read if you've enjoyed Coppola's Apocalypse Now.

  • Weinig op aan te merken

    • moeilijke taalgebruik
