This is indeed a captivating read, and I believe it is also interesting for people who don't have a linguistic background. Very well written and documented. (Also, the website of the author provides an overview of the languages described in this book. Maybe typical geek stuff, but certainly no dry linguistic account.
Certainly worth the effort of reading!
