The sixth thrilling installment in the Martin Beck detective series from the 1960s – the novels that have inspired all Scandinavian crime fiction.

Widely recognised as the greatest masterpieces of crime fiction ever written, these are the original detective stories that pioneered the detective genre.

When Viktor Palmgren, a powerful industrialist, is casually shot during an after-dinner speech, the repurcussions – both on the international money markets and on the residents of the small coastal town of Malmö – are widespread. Chief Inspector Martin Beck is called in to help catch a killer nobody, not even the victim, was able to identify. He begins a systemic search for the friends, enemies, business associates and call girls who may have wanted Palmgren dead – but in the process he finds to his dismay that he has nothing but contempt for the victim and sympathy for the murderer…

Written in the 1960s, they are the work of Maj Sjowall and Per Wahloo – a husband and wife team from Sweden. The ten novels follow the fortunes of the detective Martin Beck, whose enigmatic, taciturn character has inspired countless other policemen in crime fiction. The novels can be read separately, but do follow a chronological order, so the reader can become familiar with the characters and develop a loyalty to the series. Each book has a new introduction in order to help bring these books to a new audience.

  • Not as brilliant as earlier books

A business tycoon holds a speech for a table of six in a posh restaurant in Malmö. A man barges in, shoots the tycoon in the back of the head and leaves through an open window. It took only a few seconds. Police reacts slowly. [Inspector Mansson, who appeared in two earlier books, had a day off, but ambitious Benny Skacke, now working in Malmö after a painful error in Stockholm, quickly collates a useful description of the perp. Stockholm authorities fearing a political motive or scandal send Martin Beck(MB) to Malmö. He is not the only law enforcement agent ordered to head for Malmö...
This book may have inspired Stieg Larsson's much later trilogy: the dead man ruthlessly made his fortune and lots of enemies. His opaque network of companies was only partly busy in legitimate activities. It broke arms embargoes and dealt in what not, and not only the state of Sweden missed out taxation-wise.
In this novel, MB finally lives alone in a small apartment in the inner city and sometimes has an appetite for food. Gunvald Larsson ruins his expensive clothes again and remains unpopular with colleagues. Kollberg is overjoyed with his young wife and 2-year old daughter, but aware of being stuck in a job from which escaping is hard at his age. Young Benny Skacke still dreams of being police commissioner one day.
S&W’s pessimism about the welfare state, which began in book 3, reaches serious proportions in this volume. In the 1960s and -70s, being critical about society and its institutions in a police series was new and exciting. Rereading the series in 2012, it is a distraction. Finally, the killer is apprehended within ten days or so, much quicker than in earlier books. And what a criminal he is...
