Samenvatting

Native North Americans have rich and diverse cultures and traditions. However, many misconceptions, prejudices, and stereotypes exist due to the lack of understanding and ignorance of these cultures. It is important that children and adolescents learn about and appreciate the invaluable contributions that North American Native groups have made to American society. Equally important is the availability of resources that accurately and objectively portray the historical events that occurred when European settlers displaced thousands of Native North Americans from their ancestral homelands.

In Native North Americans in Literature for Youth, Alice Crosetto and Rajinder Garcha identify hundreds of appropriate and quality resources, including books, Internet sites, and media titles for K-12 students and educators. Entries are subdivided into chapters covering geographic regions, history, religions, social life, customs and traditions, nations, oral tradition, biographies, and fiction. Additionally, there are chapters for general reference resources, curricular resources for educators, media, and Internet sites.

Annotations provide complete bibliographical descriptions of the entries, and each entry is identified with the grade level for which it is best suited. Reviews, awards, series, and URLs for supplemental online resources are also included. Anyone—especially students, teachers, librarians, and parents—interested in locating useful and accurate resources regarding Native North Americans will find this reference book a helpful and essential tool.

Recensie(s)

This well-organized bibliography will assist librarians, educators, students, and researchers. . . . Annotations provide full publication data and a summary of contents, including series information, suggested grade levels, and quotes from professional reviews where applicable. Entries are organized into chapters on geographic regions, history, religion, customs and social life, or particular nations, as well as sections for oral literature, biographies, fiction, general reference, works for educators, and nonbook resources. Helpful indexes offer access via title, author/editor, illustrator/photographer, book awards, grade level, nations, series, or subject. This sensible organization shows an awareness of K-12 curriculum topics and will be of use to school and public librarians as well as to scholars of youth literature. * School Library Journal * Crosetto and Garcha provide a well-organized bibliography of Native North American culture and history. Chapters are segmented into topics including geographic regions, history, religion, social life, customs, traditions, and nations. Additional chapters include biographies, works of Native American fiction, resources for educators (including those available in DVD format with running time), and internet sites which can be used to support school curriculums. Some internet site annotations note if there are discussion guides available for additional curriculum support. Each entry has in-depth annotations that list publication information, contents, suggested grade levels and quotes from professional journals where available. Most resources listed in this bibliography were published from 1995 to the present. Earlier works are included based on merit and historic educational value. The extensive information in this bibliography offers excellent, reliable resources for teachers studying Native North Americans in their classrooms. * VOYA * Approximately 800 annotated titles of books on various aspects of Native American history form the body of this work, which is compiled by two specialists in children's literature who are also library school faculty members.
