The story idea and characters all have potential for a great novel, and it certainly starts off with great promise. As soon as Sunshine and the vampire escape their imprisonment, however, the whole story collapses. Its as if the author had a great idea for a story and how to start but had no idea how to continue and finish up the story. For example, several pages are dedicated to explaining in detail how Sunshine bakes bread and muffins that are the size of a human head. This is neither interesting to read or at all relevant to the story. Furthermore, the author teases the reader with an interesting back story relating to Sunshine's mysterious family, but this is all but forgotten further along the plot. All this leaves the reader feeling frustrated, because there is certainly a possibly great novel hidden in there somewhere.

Goed idee, zeer leesbare schrijfstijl. Maar het verhaal heeft (veel te) veel personages en bijverhalen die aangestipt worden maar niet relevant zijn. Aan het eind is maar 1 klein verhaaldraadje afgewikkeld. Het lijkt dus meer het eerste boek van een lange serie (waarvan ik verdere delen niet hoef te lezen), en geen alleenstaand verhaal.

Well-written, engaging, funny, and a very interesting read. The plot is quite good, though the story is really about the developing relationship between vampire Con and human Rae. This, like all of McKinley's books, goes on my reread pile next to Orson Scott Card and Octavia Butler.
