    Geschreven bij The First World War

    De schrijver laat in dit boek zien hoe veelomvattend de Eerste Wereldoorlog was. Het was echt een 'wereldoorlog', iets dat wij afgezet tegen de Tweede Wereldoorlog nog al eens vergeten.

    In 10 hoofdstukken komen alle fronten voorbij. Zowel het overbekende westelijk front als het oostelijk front, het Italiaanse front, maar ook de Balkan, Afrika en China. Daarbij wordt ook geschetst hoe deze, soms ver van elkaar verwijderde fronten, toch weer met elkaar verbonden bleken te zijn.
    De oorlog in de lucht komt er eigenlijk het slechtst vanaf, op een paar verwijzingen na wordt er nauwelijks aandacht aan besteed,.De oorlog op zee daarentegen krijgt ruimere aandacht. Ook het thuisfront en de economie in de betrokken landen wordt in het licht van de oorlog uitgelegd. Net als de onrusten en revoluties die wel of niet uitbraken naarmate de oorlog vorderde.

    Over het algemeen is het boek goed leesbaar, al vond ik er wel een paar deeltjes in zitten die ik minder 'soepel' vond. Maar dit neemt niets weg van de kwaliteit van het boek en de hoeveelheid informatie die gepresenteerd wordt.
    Mooie aanvulling zijn de zeer interessante kleurenfoto's die in het boek zijn opgenomen. Een welkome afwisseling op het zwart/wit beeld dat wij van deze wereldoorlog hebben.

    Zeer de moeite van het lezen waard!
