Samenvatting

M’lin and his companion, Lore Chenatikan are on a centuries-long quest to reunite the seven elements of the Medallion of Lorn. When the medallion’s creator, Lorn Chenatikan, the greatest of all the mages is murdered by one of his three apprentices, he scatters the separate magical jewels to the furthest reaches of the Seven Universes. Following Lorn’s death, M’lin and Lore wage a continuing war against the murderous Troy and his followers – until Troy ‘kills’ M’lin. Lore saves her companion’s life spark and secretes it within an infant on twentieth-century Earth, and the child grows into Rob Melyn, a secondary school language teacher. The story begins when Troy, believing he is close to discovering the hiding place of the Medallion of Lorn, deals Rob Melyn a savage beating, aided by two of his powerful supporters. M’lin’s persona is buried so deep within Rob’s mind, that he can reveal nothing, even under torture; and as a final codicil to the beating, Troy shoots him in the head. Rob wakes up in hospital, with a policewoman at his bedside and the beautiful Lore Chenatikan beside her. From that moment onwards, Rob’s ordinary life becomes extraordinary as Lore rescues him from ‘the ministrations of primitive medics who do not use even the simplest of magic’. Lore helps Rob to escape from the hospital to his home, and an incredulous Rob watches as she magically draws out the bullet from his brain and then proceeds to unlock the deeply hidden memories of M’lin, the most talented of Lorn’s apprentices. The two mages then resume their search for the first of the Medallion’s lost elements, which lies hidden somewhere in Sherwood Forest. There he encounters Robin Hood and his outlaw band and the evil Sheriff of Nottingham. They also discover that Troy, though unable to sense the whereabouts of the gemstone, has placed agents there who will alert him to any use of magic. Thereafter, Rob and Lore are transported by the medallion from universe to universe, seeking the missing jewels, and each time a gemstone melds with the Medallion, the object grows more powerful. They next face a world where predatory dragons have forced the peaceful T’lia to live in caves and forage by night. They befriend the T’lia and embark on a trek to the dragon citadel to find the lost gemstone and free the T’lia slaves. Next is Triaklion, a world of extreme seasons, which follows a crazy orbit around three vastly different suns. They encounter an eccentric and irascible sorcerer who has been magically imprisoned by Troy. In a violently magical confrontation, the medallion, now enhanced by three of its elements, scatters Troy and his followers and depletes their magical powers. There is a world of ice where, as a means of population control in the cities beneath the vast ice sheets, the aristocracy can buy licences to hunt children for sport. Rob is so enraged by the vile practice that he is barely able to control an urge to destroy the aristocracy root and branch. They fall from the sky into a low-gravity world where vast, insubstantial islands float in the sky over an ocean that covers the globe. Back on Earth they enter Camelot in a universe parallel to our own, where they aid the young Arthur to gain the throne vacated by his murdered father. And finally, they enter the dying universe of Elifen, the most magical of all the universes, where they seek the final element of the medallion, knowing that when it is complete, the regeneration of the ailing Elifen will begin. But, the regeneration of Elifen will enable Abeland Troy and his followers to regain their magical powers, and they will be intent on a final showdown . . .
