Ik kocht The Tarot Handbook om mijn verzamelingen boeken over de Thoth tarot aan te vullen. Uiteindelijk heb ik een dubbel gevoel over dit boek: aan de ene kant kan het een waardevolle aanvulling zijn om de Thoth intuïtief te leren benaderen, aan de andere kant schuift de schrijfster alle informatie van Crowley aan de kant waarbij ze ook nog eens grote fouten maakt wat betreft de betekenis van de symbolen die ze beschrijft.
Het boek heeft roots in de New Age beweging van de jaren '80, toen alles nog 'airy fairy' was en dat straalt dit boek uit. Een 'negatieve' kaart krijgt hoe dan ook een positieve draai, waardoor een dringend bericht verloren gaat.
Desondanks geeft de schrijfster ook interessante perspectieven over de kaarten. Ik zou dit niet als beginnersboek aanraden, het is eerder geschikt voor iemand met een stevige basis in Crowley's dogmata als aanvulling. Aan de andere kant kan een beginner leren intuïtief om te gaan met deze tarot.
Een goed boek voor de beginner is Lon Milo Duquette's Understanding Aleister Crowley's Thoth Tarot.

Er zijn wat afwijkende interpretaties in dit boek van de "standaard" Tarot literatuur. Maar dit zorgt juist voor nieuwe ideeën en mogelijkheden. De insteek is erg positief. Net zoals de astrologie van Lyn Birckbeck zijn mogelijk negatieve elementen te transformeren. De kaarten worden mooi en ruim wat betreft achtergrond geïnterpreteerd.
