Michael, a successful businessman, dearly wants to start a family with his wife, Jessica, who has no interest in having children. This disagreement drives a wedge between the couple, which leads to Michael striking up an extramarital affair with Maxine, a stunning woman. Maxine quickly falls in love with Michael, who promises her that he will soon divorce his wife so he will be free to marry her. Sharing his love of children, the pair appears to be a perfect match. Sensing she may be losing her husband and lavish lifestyle, however, Jessica, with the help of Michael's secretary, Theresa, creates a ruse, whereby she convinces Michael she is pregnant. Understanding the dynamics of his life are changing due to impending fatherhood, Michael informs Maxine of his intentions to remain with his wife. Upon hearing the devastating news, Maxine darts into the street, where she collides with an automobile. Maxine dies from her injuries, leaving Michael to grieve. When Jessica's pregnancy is exposed as a lie, Michael immediately divorces her and mourns for the departed keeper of his heart.
