Samenvatting

A new literary blockbuster from the author of }The Old Ways{, with Macfarlane exploring the underground landscapes of the man-made and natural world, bringing together the lyrical, political and philosophical in mycelical networks, glacial moulins, Bronze Age burial chambers and more

Discover the hidden worlds beneath our feet...

In Underland, Robert Macfarlane takes us on a journey into the worlds beneath our feet. From the ice-blue depths of Greenland's glaciers, to the underground networks by which trees communicate, from Bronze Age burial chambers to the rock art of remote Arctic sea-caves, this is a deep-time voyage into the planet's past and future. Global in its geography, gripping in its voice and haunting in its implications, Underland is a work of huge range and power, and a remarkable new chapter in Macfarlane's long-term exploration of landscape and the human heart.

Recensie(s)

Robert Macfarlane writes of his astonishing subterranean explorations with such wondrous, indelible power that you remember what he sees as if you saw it yourself. Underland is a profound reckoning with humankind's self-imperiled position in nature's eternal order. At once thrilling and soulful, raw and erudite, it is a book of revelations. -- Philip Gourevitch Underland is a devastating act of witness, a clear, cogent, lyrical examination of the darknesses invisible beneath our feet, both geographical and eschatological; it is blazingly vivid about the terror and grandeur of both the natural world and the consequences of human destructiveness upon the Earth. But the book's great power comes from Robert Macfarlane's deliberate turn away from despair and a simple narrative of human evildoing, and toward a more deliberate, loving, and luminous sense of awe. -- Lauren Groff A gifted storyteller and poetic writer...Wherever [Macfarlane] travels, he enhances our sense of wonder. -- Kirkus Reviews (starred review) Astonishing...A powerful, epic journey for anyone wondering about the world below and all around us and, perhaps more important, for those who aren't. -- Booklist (starred review) An eye-opening, lyrical, and even moving exploration. -- Publishers Weekly (starred review) Profound in every sense of the word. -- Richard Powers Incantatory...A worthy companion to the historian Simon Schama's monumental Landscape and Memory. -- Marcia Bjornerud - Wall Street Journal Reading Macfarlane connects us to dazzling new worlds. It's a connection that brings, more than anything else, joy. -- Barbara J. King An excellent book-fearless and subtle, empathic and strange. -- Dwight Garner - The New York Times Mesmerizing...Underland is a portal of light in dark times. -- Terry Tempest Williams - New York Times Book Review
