John Nelson en het orkest en koor van The English Concert, sopraan Lucy Crowe,
countertenor Alex Potter, tenor Michael Spyres en bas Matthew Brook voeren
Handel’s Messiah uit. "Een leven lang Messiah uitvoeren heeft me genoeg moed
gegeven om dit uitzonderlijk beroemde muziekstuk op te nemen. Met de beste
muzikanten en solisten ter wereld om me heen ben ik eindelijk klaar om mijn
persoonlijke interpretatie voor het nageslacht vast te leggen." De Amerikaanse
dirigent John Nelson, vooral bekend om zijn interpretaties van Berlioz, dirigeerde
Händels meest gevierde oratorium in Coventry Cathedral in het hart van Engeland in
november 2022. "In de huidige turbulente wereld hoop ik dat dit concert van
Messiah op deze symbolische locatie een krachtige boodschap van hoop kan zijn."
De uitvoering is nu uitgebracht als een drie-disc set - bestaande uit de 2CD
audioversie en 1DVD. Nelsons gekozen versie van de partituur weerspiegelt de
evolutie van Messiah in de periode van 1741 (de originele autograaf) tot het begin
van de jaren 1750, toen een 'standaard' versie van het oratorium vorm kreeg.
Daarnaast bieden de CDs acht bekende aria’s in alternatieve versies.
