Mindy McGinnis previously wrote Not a Drop to Drink and it companion, in a Handful of Dust, two post apocalyptic survival stories. This book is very different from those, this is a gothic historical novel set in an insane asylum. Grace Mae is a girl from a very wealthy family in Boston, her father being a state senator, but her family isn't as nice as it seems, and she ends up inside the Boston insane asylum, where she stops using her voice because she knows no one listens to her anyway. The first part of the book describes the horrific methods in those asylums, but the story turns around when a visiting doctor discovers Grace's mind hidden beneath her madness, and takes her with him to a more ethical asylum in Ohio, where she has more freedom, and makes two very interesting friends, Nell, and Lizzie, neither of them are really crazy, and the doctor takes her to crime scenes because she is very clever and, because people think she's insane, allow her to listen to their conversations. but this becomes dangerous when a man starts killing young women. '
This book is an exciting crime story, but it also explores the darker parts of the human mind, and the scars her awful childhood has left on Grace, and how she will deal with it when her past catches up with her.Vond je dit een nuttige review?00 -
Hoewel mooi, toch teleurgesteld
Hoewel het boek erg mooi geschreven is, heeft het mij toch teleurgesteld. Ik verwachtte een prachtig verhaal met een spannend moordmysterie en lugubere crimescenes. Het voldeed niet aan mijn verwachtingen. Ook vond ik het Engels moeilijk in te komen, maar ik lees nog niet erg lang Engelse boeken. Het is verder een mooi verhaal, zolang je er niet met te hoge verwachtingen in gaat en niet erg kritisch bent, is er niet veel op aan te merken.
