Ciudad imponente, antigua y moderna a la vez, Buenos Aires, “La Reina del Plata” como la llamó un tango, fue fundada en 1536 por el espaïol Pedro de Mendoza, casi con seguridad en el emplazamiento actual del Parque Lezama. Ése primer intento tuvo poca vida ya que pronto debió ser abandonado. En 1580 Juan de Garay la funda por segunda vez donde se encuentra la Plaza de Mayo. En el siglo XIX, el puerto de la Boca fue el punto de Ilegada de la gran corriente inmigratoria que el estado argentino promov1ó para poblar la nación. Espafoles, italianos, ingleses, polacos y rusos le imprimieron a Buenos Aires la riqueza cultural que siempre la distinguió. Hoy la ciudad es una hermosa conjunción de estilos coloniales, europeos clásicos, modernos y de avanzada. A esto se suma su inquietante y variada vida cultural: tango, toda clase de música, teatros, museos, cines. La mayor parte de su agitada actividad comercial y financiera se aglutina en el Centro, Puerto Madero y Retiro. Cada uno de estos lugares y cada rincón de los barrios de Buenos Aires revela interesantes historias de la ciudad misma, de su gente, de sus costumbres, de sus mitos, de sus amores. An tmposing city, both old and modern, Buenos Aires “the Queen of the River Plate” as it was dubbed in a tango, was founded in 1536 by the Spaniard Pedro de Mendoza, almost certainly where Parque Lezama lies today. That early intent was short-lived, as soon the enclave had to be abandoned. In 1580 it was founded for the second time by Juan de Garay, at the site where Plaza de Mayo 1s at present. In the XIX century the port of the Boca became the point of arrival for the flow of immigration that the Argentine state promoted to populate the nation. Spanish, Italians, English, Polish and Russians left the imprint of cultural wealth that has always been a distinctive mark of Buenos Aires. Nowadays the city is an appealing assembly of styles: colonial, classic European, modern and avant-garde. Its varied and exciting cultural life 1s added to this: tango, all kinds of music, theatres, museums, cinemas. Most of its bustling commerctal and financtal activity is concentrated downtown and in the areas of Puerto Madero and Retiro. Each one of these quarters and every nook in the different neighbourhoods reveals interesting stortes of the city itself, of its people, its habrts, its myths and ts loves. The never-ending transformations it has experienced since its birth, coalesced wth testimonies from the past, make the city as attractive and cosmopolitan as are the main metropolis in the world.
