This is one of my new favorite series, it's so amazing and I want to recommend it to everyone. It's funny, fast-paced, beautifully written and action packed.

This book is about Piper, who dreams about becoming a Consul: a keeper of the peace between humans and daemons. This strong young woman struggles with this path that she has imagened for her, because there is a little problem: Piper doesn't have magic. This doesn't come in very handy when your job is about keeping (powerfull) daemons in check.
However, this is the least of her problems. When her home is being attacked, she is confused about what's going on, mostly when they put her in a jail. It appears that the secret weapon (on which the transport was planned to happen that day) is gone, including her father, and she gets the blame.
With two daemons, Lyre and Ash, she runs away on a mission to bring back the Sahar, the secret weapon, stay alive and clean her and her fathers name. Because that isn't a lot at all.

Piper, our main character, is a very strong, tough and funny. She is a real heroine in my opinion, she comes with her flaws and it is what makes her very real. Speaking from this book and having read the other books in this series, I can say that the development that Piper goes through is, in my opinion, brilliant. I did not for one second irritate myself about anything of her, but you could still see that some actions needed changed. This is a combination that I very much enjoyed. She is one of my all time favourite heroines.

Then we have our second character: Lyre. Goodies, how I adore Lyre, he is so funny and brings a lightness to this book that is absolutely amazing. He appears to be this sex-crazy asshole but slowly you get to see that he is much more than this. How he is being a friend to both Piper, as well as Ash, is a part of what made me like him so much. He is such a likable guy. On the one hand, he brings lightness and humour into this book and on the other hand he shows so much sympathy and understanding. For me a golden combination. Oh btw, he is hot. So, you know, ugh.

And than the last one I want to talk about, but most defenitely not the least is our dark bad guy: Ash. He is this amazing, scary, impressive fighter who can handle pretty much anything with a coollness about him which covers like a mask all around him. Throughout the book you see some other changes as well. What I liked most were the "well, shit" moments, which became his signature in my opinion. His dry sense of humour is just amazing and this mouth-wathering guy is amazing.

Everybody should really pick up this book and give it a go!
